Mock News Profile

Lauren Fischetti, a freshman at High Point University, hopes to become a successful event planner in the future.

Her passion for event planning began during her junior year of high school. It was fueled by her desire to work with people and also her vision of loving her job each and every day.

“I never want my job to feel like a dreadful chore in my life,” Fischetti said in an interview Friday. “I’ve seen people live a life filled with insignificance because of their career choice.”

Growing up in New York, Fischetti always thought that she wanted to be a teacher.

“Teachers, doctors, firefighters–that’s all that you knew at such a young age,” Fischetti said.

At the mid-point of her high school career, Fischetti began to do college research as well as narrow down her career choices. She decided that she wanted to go South, so she limited her choices to schools in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

After narrowing down her college search, Fischetti began to do research on what credentials she would need to become a thriving event planner. Event planning was almost nonexistent at most schools, which frustrated her.

She decided that being a business major was her only option for this nonexistent major. She applied to High Point University as a Business Administration major, and was later switched by High Point to a Communication major. Fischetti was ecstatic when she learned that High Point decided this year to make Sports and Event Management a major, making it one of only two schools in the country who offer this as a major.

Fischetti’s decision to seek an event planning career path is supported by her admiration of her boss, Lori Dietrich.

“One of my biggest influences for choosing this career path is my boss, Lori" Fischetti said. "She is so knowledgeable about the industry and is a major asset to my potential success."

Fischetti began working at a florist in her hometown of Long Island, NY in 2013. She knew her boss prior to working for her, because her children graduated from the same high school Fischetti attended, but she didn’t know much about flowers or what the job entailed. To Fischetti, it was just an after-school job that supported her shopping funds.

What she soon discovered was that her boss used to work in the event planning industry, before opening her own flower shop. What she learned from Dietrich was much more than Fischetti anticipated.

"She is a powerful businesswoman and a networking powerhouse," Fischetti said. "What she has done in just a few short years to her small business are things most people can't complete in a lifetime. I admire her strength and dedication. She is my role model."

With an enormous amount of passion and drive, Fischetti envisions a bright future. She wants to let her career guide her wherever it may, but she wishes to stay close to her family and friends. She can anticipate that everything she has envisioned for herself will come true, but only time will tell.

“I believe that every person in this world has a purpose," Fischetti said. "When you find that purpose, don’t let it go. It may be the path you’re destined to take in life.”
